Southampton were held 1-1 by Coventry City at St Mary's despite playing much of the second half against 10 men, as Tonda Eckert's side could not turn pressure into a winner.

As reported by Sainstmarching.com, the visitors had the lion's share of possession before the break, yet Saints created the clearer openings. Adam Armstrong dragged wide from Finn Azaz's pass, then Léo Scienza was denied by Carl Rushworth's feet.

Frank Lampard was incensed when referee Adam Herczeg rejected a Coventry penalty shout after Taylor Harwood-Bellis's challenge on Haji Wright as Gavin Bazunu smothered. The keeper also saved well from Josh Eccles late in the half.

On the stroke of half-time, Ephron Mason Clark found space between Welington and Harwood-Bellis to head Coventry in front. After the restart, Jay Dasilva was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Welington inside 90 seconds, and 10 minutes later Adam Armstrong crossed from the left for Nathan Wood to nod the equaliser.

Southampton pushed for a winner but could not force it. Scienza took player of the match with 8/10, recording three shots on target and five dribbles. Wood earned 7/10, Flynn Downes also 7/10, while several others were marked 6/10, with Tom Fellows and Cameron Archer at 5/10.
