Southampton and Tonda Eckert have a cheat code ahead of the 2026/27 Championship season and the world is realising it.
Southampton's failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League in 2025/26 was made all the more painful by the circumstances surrounding their campaign under Tonda Eckert but 2026/27 could still be a big season for them.
The German had guided the Saints into the play-off places, only for the club's hopes of an immediate return to the top flight to be derailed by the fallout from the much-discussed Spygate controversy. Missing out on promotion was a major blow, which inevitably created uncertainty heading into the summer.
That uncertainty is likely to result in interest from elsewhere in several of Southampton's standout performers. The likes of Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis could attract attention after excellent campaigns, while other key figures like Shea Charles and Caspar Jander may also have opportunities to test themselves at a higher level as well.
For Southampton, retaining enough quality to remain competitive will be crucial. That is why one piece of business already completed could prove to be so important when the Championship is shaping up to be fiercely competitive in 2026/27.
Southampton will be battling alongside the likes of Burnley, Wolves, West Ham United, Middlesbrough, and Millwall, while several other clubs will harbour promotion ambitions of their own. Margins are likely to be fine, meaning every squad decision matters.

Against the backdrop of the strength of the division, securing a proven goalscorer before the summer market gathers pace looks increasingly significant already. Cyle Larin's permanent arrival from Mallorca for a reported fee of around €3 million may not have generated the same headlines as some other transfers so far.
However, it could prove to be one of the smartest deals completed by any Championship club this year. After initially arriving on loan in January, the Canadian international made an immediate impact. Across all competitions, he finished with 11 goals and two assists in 27 appearances for Canada and Southampton, while nine of those goals and one assist came in just 22 outings the Saints.
For a player adapting to a new club midway through the season, those numbers are impressive. The fact Southampton have now secured him permanently for such a modest fee only strengthens the deal further. At 31, some may question whether there is significant value left in the striker. However, Larin's recent performances suggest age is far less important than output.
He remains a physically imposing centre-forward capable of occupying defenders, bringing teammates into play, and providing a reliable goal threat inside the penalty area. Perhaps most encouragingly for Southampton supporters, his form on that front, and on the goals front as well, has continued onto the international stage.
Representing host nation Canada at the 2026 World Cup, Larin has already registered two goals and one assist, further enhancing his reputation on one of football's biggest stages. His performances as a focal point should come as little surprise given his international pedigree.
With 32 goals and five assists in 92 appearances for Canada, he has established himself as one of the country's greatest goalscorers and most influential attacking players.

The timing of that form could hardly be better from Southampton's perspective. While other clubs may spend much of the summer searching for a reliable centerpiece in attack, the Saints already have one in place.
Promotion challenges are often built around dependable goalscorers. Southampton may lose key players before the transfer window closes, and replacing every departure would be difficult, but having a proven striker around whom Eckert can build his attack provides an invaluable foundation already.
In many ways, Larin looks like Southampton's cheat code heading into 2026/27. It's already clear how he offers plenty of experience, physicality, leadership, and goals. On top of that, his recent displays for both club and country suggest he is arriving at exactly the right moment.
If the Saints are to bounce back from last season's disappointment and force their way into the promotion picture once again, few players will be more important. Larin may well go on and score more regularly in front of the eyes of the world from here too, with qualification to the knockouts all but secured for Canada already.
