What followed was one of English football’s great ironies. American airline Air Florida took over for 1983-84, then went bust before a ball was kicked, yet the fuzzy felt branding stayed on the home kit. Southampton still finished league runners-up and reached a cup semi-final.

Stability arrived with Draper Tools from 1984 to 1993. Shirts bearing the firm were worn by Jimmy Case, Matthew Le Tissier and Alan Shearer. Hoardings at The Dell carried local businesses and regional brewers, deepening community ties.

As the Premier League era made football a global TV spectacle, Southampton refreshed their look. Irish electricals company Dimplex fronted the shirt from 1993 to 1995 with a plain text mark.

Yorkshire software outfit Sanderson followed from 1995 to 1999, a Pepsi-style design splashed across the red-and-white stripes.

With The Dell’s farewell approaching, Friends Provident became main sponsor in 1999, linking the old ground to the coming move to St Mary’s.
