Optimism around Southampton has lifted despite a four-point deduction, with the club, according to the Daily Echo, in advanced talks over a permanent deal for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, who impressed on loan.

The Spygate scandal has surfaced, making the move potentially tricky, yet the report says Southampton want it done quickly and that Peretz wants to return to help a promotion push.

Statements from Dragan Solak and Tonda Eckert have underlined a desire to make progress when the 2026/27 campaign begins, with the club keen to move on from Spygate. Solak has publicly backed Eckert to stay at St. Mary’s, though any FA ban could define whether he takes the reins.

Peretz, 25, kept nine clean sheets in 23 Championship appearances during his half-season spell, a mid-campaign addition who barely put a foot wrong.

Securing him permanently would be a statement of intent and a timely boost heading into 26/27, sending a message that Southampton mean business.

It could also help Southampton convince others to commit, with James Bree and Ross Stewart namechecked, and the possibility of Leo Scienza staying given his friendship with Peretz.

All told, the coming season may not be one to fear, and the Saints could be back in the promotion mix despite off-field turbulence.
