Southampton linked with permanent transfer for Filip Djuricic

With just six goals scored in their opening eight Premier League games of the season prior to their Saturday afternoon clash against Burnley, it’s safe to say that Southampton haven’t been on the finest attacking form so far in this campaign.

With this in mind, it’s not surprising to hear that the Saints have been linked with a move for an attacking midfielder who could boost the team’s offensive power, although some Southampton fans could indeed be surprised as to who is being linked with a permanent move St. Mary’s.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) that Southampton and fellow Premier League club West Ham United are apparently eyeing up a potential transfer move for Sassuolo’s Filip Djuricic when his current contract at the Serie A club runs out in the summer.

St. Mary’s return?

The 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt, joined Sassuolo from fellow Italian club Sampdoria back in the 2018 summer transfer window on a free transfer. Since then, he has made 96 appearances for Sassuolo across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in the process.

Would you take Djuricic back at Southampton on a free transfer?

Back in February 2015, Djuricic signed for Southampton on a loan deal until the end of that season but was unable to make any sort of positive impact, failing to score or set up a goal in nine appearances for the Saints.

Despite his poor spell at St Mary’s, he was still labelled a “promising” player by Saints captain James Ward-Prowse following his debut for the club shortly after he arrived on loan.

We feel that Djuricic has fulfilled some of the promise he showed at Southampton during his time with Sassuolo in terms of his goals and assists. A potential permanent move back to St Mary’s could be a good move for all parties, especially if they can secure him on a free transfer in the summer, which would surely be a big positive for Hasenhuttl as an extra attacking option in his squad with previous experience of playing for the club.
