Southampton join Leceister City and Ipswich Town in the promoted lot as all three sides gear up for the Premier League next season.
Adam Armstrong’s lone goal stood the difference at Wembley Stadium as Southampton took a narrow victory over Leeds United in the EFL Championship playoff final to secure promotion to the Premier League for next season. This is a big boost for The Saints who are now set to make their presence in the top flight after getting relegated last campaign.
Russell Martin’s men finished fourth in the Championship standings and had to go through the West Brom test to play in the final today. The St. Mary’s dwellers sealed a 3-1 win in the semi-finals second leg after a goalless first one.
While Southampton fans go into revelry tonight, Leeds United players were in tears as they will have to spend another season in the second flight of English football. They will be in contention for promotion next year but they are set to lose several players followed by a sharp decline in revenue.
Southampton captain Jack Stephens was left speechless in jubilation after the final whistle. He commemorated this day as one of his career’s ‘best’ days. He said: “I’m lost for words. Sorry, I’m a little bit emotional right now. I’m so proud to be captain of this club. This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in football.“
