The Hammers' summer signing made a positive impression at Turf Moor on Sunday

Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz has been amongst those reacting to Manor Solomon's impressive debut performance for West Ham United in the entertaining 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers have been heavily fancied to win the Championship title this campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo, who already has experience of winning the second tier of English football during his Wolves tenure.

After emerging victorious in the EFL Cup first round last weekend, the opening encounter of the Championship season saw them face off against their newly-relegated counterparts, with the Clarets under new management in the form of Nicky Hayen.

In what was an intriguing matchup, it was Burnley who created more chances, as well as producing more which were clear-cut, than the visitors, but West Ham still found themselves in a comfortable position to wrap up an opening-day victory when Solomon's 72nd-minute strike followed on from Max Kilman's header inside the opening 10 minutes.

However, it wasn't to be for the East London side, who saw ex-Millwall forward, Zian Flemming, net twice inside a nine-minute period, with the first of those coming from the spot with seven minutes remaining after Oliver Scarles' rash challenge on Marcus Edwards.

Solomon is one of four players to have been added to Nuno's squad this summer at present, joining for a reported £5m from London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

The Israeli winger was a key factor in Leeds United's 2024/25 Championship-winning side under Daniel Farke, and after spending last season on loan with Fulham, he showcased exactly why his signing has been viewed as a bargain fee with a positive performance in East Lancashire.

Naturally, though, the 27-year-old will have felt a tinge of disappointment that his goal from Mohamadou Kante's pullback didn't lead to three points, and he took to social media post-match to issue an immediate reflection on his debut.

Not the result we wanted, but we’ll learn from it," Solomon said.

"See you all Saturday."

Amongst those in the replies was Saints goalkeeper and Solomon's international teammate, Peretz, who returned to St. Mary's on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich, with the 26-year-old responding with a star emoji.

Daniel Peretz's Championship return with Southampton didn't go to plan either

There has been plenty of noise surrounding developments at both West Ham and Southampton this summer, albeit for very different reasons as Saints' start to the competitive season has begun with continued uncertainty over the future of Tonda Eckert.

It has been suggested the German's FA ban, as a result of the Spygate scandal, could come into force in September, whilst the South Coast side began their campaign on minus-four points through one of the punishments sanctioned by the EFL in May after the club's expulsion from the play-off final.

And, whilst Southampton have, up to now, retained most of their core from last season, Peretz's return to the Championship was far from ideal as they were defeated 2-1 by Watford at Vicarage Road, despite Cyle Larin continuing his own purple patch throughout 2026 in the second half.

Daniel Peretz and Manor Solomon could face each other as early as next week

Given their international allegiances, it is no surprise that Peretz and Solomon appear to have a close eye on how each other perform in this season's Championship, whilst both West Ham and Southampton have been tipped to be among the promotion candidates, even taking the latter's points deficit into account.

They could also face each other as early as next week, with Saints hosting the Irons in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday, August 25th in a 7:45PM kick-off.

Often, head coaches can use the early rounds of cup competitions to rotate their squads, but, in truth, there was a concern over the experience and quality of Nuno's substitutes on Sunday, meaning that the likes of Solomon could be utilised from the starting lineup in Hampshire depending on how many additions can be made to West Ham's squad between now and then.
