According to Sainstmarching.com, Southampton face a late scramble up front as Cameron Archer is set to join Auxerre, reuniting with former Saints manager Will Still, and is undergoing a medical. Damion Downs is also expected to head out on loan and Ben Brereton Diaz has returned to Sheffield United.

Atletico Madrid and Levante are said to be in talks over Carlos Martin, with interest from Real Valladolid, CD Tenerife, Castellón and Almería. From abroad, Southampton and Hajduk Split have reportedly made enquiries for the 24-year-old forward.

Even so, it appears Levante could win the race before the window closes, which may leave Southampton short of time to add support for Cyle Larin and Divin Mubama.

Martin scored 15 in La Liga 2 for CD Mirandes and 20 for Atletico B, but has only two La Liga goals from 43 outings. A move to the EFL would represent a gamble given his lack of exposure to its demands.

Southampton know late deals can pay off, after landing Leo Scienza last summer, whose debut Championship season brought 17 goal contributions. Even if a striker does not arrive, Zach Abbott has joined on loan from Nottingham Forest and the current attack handled Millwall in a 5-1 win, with Mubama also on target at Stoke City. The concern would be cover if Mubama or Larin suffered injuries, although the squad could still have enough to push for promotion.
