Southampton’s improvised centre-back duo held firm at Stoke City, yet a floated defensive option now appears set for Sheffield United instead.

According to the Daily Echo, Adam Webster was discussed as a possible signing, while the Sheffield Star reports final details are being completed for the free agent to join Chris Wilder at Bramall Lane.

Jack Stephens and Nathan Wood largely kept the Potters quiet, although Ethan Galbraith prodded in an equaliser. Between them they totalled 10 tackles and duels won.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis could follow Shea Charles to the Premier League, with Aston Villa interested. Banking on Stephens and Wood would be risky, given Stephens’ errors against Watford and Wood’s struggle to nail down a starting spot since 2024.

Webster, 31, made 158 appearances for Brighton before his release and is strong on the ball. He averaged 91% and 88% passing accuracy across his last two Premier League seasons, and posted eight clean sheets in 27 league games in 2022/23.

Even so, this would be a gamble. He started only 11 league matches in 2024/25 because of hamstring and thigh issues, then sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2025/26. If his Sheffield move is sealed, he is due to face Tonda Eckert’s side in November.
