Southampton are reportedly exploring a move for Estoril defensive midfielder Antef Tsoungui as they prioritise replacing Shea Charles before the window shuts on September one.

According to ESPN, Saints and Rangers consider Tsoungui a target, and Estoril are seeking around €five to €six million.

The 23-year-old, who can also operate at centre-back, has begun his second season in the Portuguese top flight. He is the latest name linked with a switch to St Mary’s.

Tsoungui has three years left on his contract, having joined from Feyenoord on deadline day last year.

Charles left for Fulham last week in a transfer worth an initial £26million, with a possible further £4million in performance-related add-ons.

Last season Tsoungui ranked fifth in the Primeira Liga for ball recoveries in his own half and third for defensive ground duels won among defensive midfielders.
