Tonda Eckert says Caspar Jander remains unavailable for tomorrow’s Championship meeting with Stoke City at St Mary’s.

According to Daily Echo, the midfielder has yet to recover after limping off eight minutes into Southampton’s first pre-season friendly at Eastleigh, having missed most of pre-season.

Eckert added it should take a few more days, hopefully not too long, and he is aiming for some point next week, either midweek or towards the weekend, but tomorrow would be too much of a risk.

Southampton have three home matches in a week, with a Carabao Cup tie against West Ham following Stoke on Tuesday night. The head coach reported no fresh issues going into the weekend.

He offered a positive update on Finn Azaz, 25, who missed pre-season with a shin injury but came off the bench in both games so far, registering an assist in the 2-0 cup win at Colchester United and catching the eye after the break in the 2-1 loss at Watford.

Eckert said Azaz is not merely in contention, he will start.
