Chris Sutton has voiced his opinion in Southampton's favour despite criticizing them on numerous occasions.
Until a few days ago, the Southampton versus Liverpool matchup was considered another formal Premier League fixture. Almost every football fan was sure of the resulting outcome but the way things progressed at Anfield has taken everyone by surprise.
Otherwise, how could it be possible that counter arguments are still going on for a penalty decision? Regardless, that isn't the only moment that has caused a stir in the English football landscape.
We are talking about Darwin Nunez's terrible foul on Kyle Walker-Peters. Moments before Southampton were heading towards half-time with their hard earned 1-0 advantage, the Liverpool striker let his frustration vent out on Walker-Peters.
After all, trailing in front of a rock-bottom team doesn't go well for any ambitious top-flight outfit. Still, Nunez's unpleasant gesture can't be defended which rightfully argued for an immediate red-card punishment.
On the contrary, the match officials let Nunez avoid a significant Premier League suspension by only handing him a yellow card.
Expectedly, this judgment let down the Southampton supporters who knew that they stood a great victorious chance while having a scoreline as well as a personnel advantage.
Fortunately, someone has publicly raised eyebrows on this matter. Surprisingly, that person is Chris Sutton who is a regular Southampton flaw-finder himself.
Hopefully, Sutton's verdict initiates some welcome refereeing improvement in Southampton's next games. The next challenge is up against Wolves and let's wish that the Saints don't end up regretting the result due to some debatable on-field decisions.
