Spain began their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign with a thrilling 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern, roaring into a four-goal lead before the break that was capped off with a late Cristina Martín-Prieto header inside stoppage time.

The reigning World Champions are widely tipped as the favourites to add European silverware to the cabinet this summer, and a statement win in their campaign opener has certainly put them on the right path.

There was further good news for Montse Tomé’s side in the second half, with Aitana Bonmatí deemed fit enough for a cameo appearance after her hospitalisation with viral meningitis last week.

As it happened

With Portugal donning black armbands in memory of Diogo Jota, who passed away this morning in a fatal car crash that also claimed the life of his brother, an impeccably observed moment’s silence preceded the match action at Bern’s Stadion Wankdorf.

Spain were fastest out of the blocks and took the lead within two minutes, as a deep Olga Carmona pass from the left flank allowed Esther González to take a touch and fire past Inês Pereira with a tidy volley.

It proved to be the start of a tremendous rout, with Mariona Caldentey registering the assist for Spain’s second goal six minutes later when Vicky López turned home her cross.

The Arsenal maestro picked up yet another assist soon after, this time finding Alexia Putellas as the two-time Ballon d’Or winner skipped inside and rippled the back of the net.

And Spain weren’t done there: González found their fourth just before the break, pouncing on the rebound after Clàudia Pina had seen her headed attempt cruelly denied by the woodwork.

Portugal, to their credit, looked to be keeping Spain at bay after the break – but their defence was finally penetrated inside stoppage time by substitute Cristina Martín-Prieto, who rose highest at the back post to nod home from a well-placed Salma Paralluelo cross.

The hefty win sees Spain rise to the top of Group B. They’ll return to action on Monday when they face Belgium, while Portugal will look to pick up their first points of the campaign against Italy, who triumphed 1-0 in their opener.
