Spain and Argentina will face off in the 2026 World Cup Final this evening, in New Jersey. Arguably the two best national sides on the planet, having both won their respective continental prizes two years ago, they will now go head-to-head in an attempt to win the greatest prize the sport has to offer.
Argentina have the extra pressure of potentially becoming just the third team to retain the World Cup, joining Brazil (1958 & 1962) and Italy (1934 & 1938). Meanwhile, Spain are competing in just their second-ever World Cup final, with the other coming in 2010, when they won the tournament in South Africa thanks to an extra-time winner from Andrés Iniesta.
Both sides won their groups at this World Cup, before toppling Cape Verde and Austria in the Round of 32, Egypt and Portugal in the last 16, Belgium and Switzerland in the quarter-finals and finally France and England earlier this week to secure their spots in the final.
Spain have certainly looked more in control of their matches than Argentina have, and have only conceded one goal so far this tournament. By contrast, Argentina have conceded eight in their seven games so far; however, they have mustered up some moments of magic when needed most. La Albiceste required extra time to beat Cape Verde before pulling off a stunning comeback against Egypt in the following round. It was extra time again to defeat the 10-men of Switzerland in the last eight before they netted twice in the closing stages of Wednesday’s game with England to break the Three Lions’ hearts.
Both sides will have their full squads available for selection in this one, with star men Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal both expected to start for their respective nations.
Argentina have the experience, but Spain have looked unflappable so far this Summer. Who will come out on top? Find out at 8pm BST, live on BBC and ITV.
