S
pain head coach Jorge Vilda has told his side to stick to their style as they bid to topple England in Sunday’s World Cup Final.
The Lionesses are favourites for the game as they bid to follow up winning Euro 2022 last summer.
Despite off-field issues, Spain have managed to reach the final and Vilda has told the team to stick to their usual passing style and not change for England.
“Tomorrow is not the day to change the style it’s the day to be ourselves, to play with a united team who is fighting and helping each other,” he said.
“Once the referee blows her whistle, the start and end are very important, and that we play well during the game, it will be an interesting battle.
“From the very beginning the players have been united working a lot, today will be the 65th training session and all of them have gone well and on the field.
“The training games everything has been extraordinary, They will have memories for the rest of their lives had fun and tomorrow we want to celebrate together.
“I’m extremely pleased to play a final of a World Cup tomorrow to feel a country that’s supporting a team and possibility to make many people happy and it could be the happiest day of their lives. It’s a huge responsibility but we feel very supported.”
Spain have a fully fit squad to choose from, with Salma Paralluelo okay after pulling up in training yesterday.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed an excellent tournament, scoring in both the quarter-final and semi-final.
“We have 23 players available it’s clear that in pro football they’ll always be something bothering one or another player, but it’s not something that worries us,” said Vilda.
Spain have made the final despite in September of last year 15 players refusing to play for the national side. They were unhappy with the environment of the setup and called for change. Three have returned for the World Cup.
Vilda was asked on Saturday how he has coped with the chaos, and said: “Next question please.”
He was later questioned on if he felt sorry top stars, such as Mapi Leon, were missing out and said: “What we want to do tomorrow is to be the best in the world and we will do this by winning the final.”
