Returning from a serious knee injury during the season, the former Villarreal player built steadily over recent months and started every Spain game in the United States.

Already named the best player at Euro 2024, a few months before lifting the Ballon d’Or, the Manchester City midfielder added another individual honour alongside the World Cup secured at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Pau Cubarsi was named the tournament’s best young player, and Unai Simon was recognised as best goalkeeper. Both were rewarded for their consistency.
