Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has singled out Liverpool's Florian Wirtz as the German player he would most like to have in his squad.

The Spain boss was asked by German outletBILD whether there was a player from Germany he would like to call upon for La Roja, according to Fabrizio Romano. He did not hesitate.

De La Fuente made clear how highly he rates the Liverpool midfielder, who has endured a difficult period in the Premier League.

Wirtz has faced scrutiny since his £116m transfer to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, in what represented a British transfer record at the time.

The 23-year-old has scored just four goals and provided five assists in 37 league appearances for the Reds, withrecent criticism of his role and output from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Wirtz is currently with the Germany squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures, linking up with new head coach Jurgen Klopp for the first time.

Klopp, who spent nine-and-a-half years as Liverpool manager, defended Wirtz's club performances after his call-up to the national team earlier this month.

“I think he's the player who covered the most ground at Liverpool this season, so the willingness is absolutely there,"Klopp said.

“We have to move away from the idea that we need to see special moments from him. He is there to help us as a team. We have to make sure that Flo feels comfortable with us.“When the team works, then every player shines as a consequence. You have to be satisfied with a game in which Flo Wirtz gave everything but didn’t have a goal or assist."
