Spain’s win over Uruguay sealed first place in Group H at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and sent them into the round of 32 as a seeded side. It came at a cost, with Yéremy Pino likely to miss the rest with a clavicle injury and Nico Williams finishing with muscle discomfort, pending scans.
Concern around Williams is high. The head coach urged patience, saying the problem could be an overload or fatigue, but the Athletic Club winger left Estadio Akron, Guadalajara, limping and downcast. Cadena SER reports that early signs are not positive and he could also miss the remainder of the tournament.
Uruguay’s physical approach may have left Spain without two key wide men. If Pino and Williams are confirmed out, Luis de la Fuente loses both of his natural wingers. With Lamine Yamal nailed on at right and Víctor Muñoz carrying a knock, Alejandro Baena looks set to keep the berth on the left after his goal and MVP display in the final group game.
Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Gavi are viewed as alternatives in that role.
Williams has endured an injury-hit season, arrived with a knock to build rhythm during the group stage and may now face another setback in a short tournament that could leave him without further minutes.
Spain’s round-of-32 tie is scheduled for Thursday 2 July at 21.00 CEST. Their opponents will be the winner of the Austria v Algeria match, which takes place on Sunday at 04.00 CEST in Kansas City, and a draw would favour Austria.
