Thibaut Courtois has been one of Real Madrid’s silent heroes once again this season, stepping up consistently at the back and ensuring the team does not concede unnecessary goals.

He has started 12 league games for the club so far and has six clean sheets to his name already in addition to overseeing two clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League.

In fact, he is one of the league’s top goalkeepers in terms of number of goals conceded per game as he averages just 0.8 goals per game. Only Joan Garcia and Luiz Junior boast of better records.

Unai Simon praises Courtois

The Spanish national team’s first-choice goalkeeper Unai Simon spoke to AS in a recent interview where he had nothing but praise when asked to give his thoughts on Thibaut Courtois.

“Thibaut Courtois is undoubtedly the best GK in the world if he’s at his current level,” he began, making it clear how much respect he has for the Belgian star.

He then went on to name the Real Madrid star as the reference point for all goalkeepers across the globe.

“It’s IMPOSSIBLE to find anyone better than him. If there’s a ball that Courtois can’t stop, then NONE of us can stop it,” he said.

In recent years, having Courtois in goal has been as important for Real Madrid as having a star-studded attack on the other end of the field.

After all, the veteran has single-handedly won the team games on the highest stage, including a UEFA Champions League final that would be lost with anyone else in goal.

So far this season, the Belgian star has kept up his superhuman standards and is doing a fantastic job in goal – something that was made clear during Real Madrid’s game at Anfield.

Given that his age is now 33, however, Real Madrid must begin serious thought over his eventual successor. After all, replacing Courtois will perhaps be the most difficult baton to pass.
