The Spanish Football Federation has expressed surprise after learning that Lamine Yamal underwent a medical procedure without prior notice to the national team’s medical staff.

In a statement released earlier today, they confirmed that the Barcelona winger had an invasive radiofrequency treatment on Monday morning to address a recurring groin problem.

Spain’s medical department stated that it was only informed of the procedure later that afternoon, after the national team’s training camp for November’s World Cup qualifiers had already begun.

A medical report was received later that evening, recommending that the 18-year-old rest for seven to ten days.

The federation described the situation as ‘unexpected and disappointing’ and confirmed that Yamal has been released from the squad to focus on his recovery. Barcelona have yet to comment.

This is the second consecutive international break Yamal has missed due to the same injury.

He was ruled out of Spain’s fixtures in October just hours after being called up, with Barcelona announcing a recurrence of his groin issue.

The forward’s workload has been a growing topic of tension between club and country.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had previously criticised Spain’s handling of the teenager during the September international window.

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente defended the national team at the time, insisting that ‘zero risks’ were taken with the youngster.

Yamal has made 11 appearances for Barcelona this season, registering six goals and six assists across all competitions.

Spain, who have already secured qualification for the World Cup, face Georgia on Saturday before concluding their group campaign against Turkey next Tuesday.
