Spain teammate explains why he and Lamine Yamal are “polar opposites” | OneFootball

A whole host of Barcelona players are currently with their respective national teams for the first international break of the 2026-27 season. Most of them are with Spain, including Lamine Yamal, who is ready to continue his excellent start to the campaign against England, Croatia (x2) and Czechia.

Lamine Yamal had a subpar 2026 World Cup by his standards, but he still helped Spain win the tournament. He is expected to resume his partnership with Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal in attack, and ahead of the matches taking place, the latter has been speaking about the Barcelona player in the media.

Oyarzabal revealed to Radio Marca (via MD) that he and Lamine Yamal are “polar opposites” off the pitch, although they share a good connection when playing together for Spain.

“It is clear that we are completely different and that we are perhaps polar opposites, but we get along very well – and I think that many times, polar opposites attract. I am going to try to help him in whatever way I can. I’m not going to be able to help him on the pitch, in what it’s like to play football, because I’m not going to be able to tell him much about that.

“He is a differential, not only because of what he does, but because of what he generates in the opponent. What he generates in his teammates as well, knowing that he is always there, that does a lot in football, and I think that perhaps not so much importance is given.”

Could Lamine Yamal and Oyarzabal link up at club level?

In the summer, Barcelona showed interest in Oyarzabal as an alternative to Julian Alvarez, but they ultimately made no move for the Real Sociedad attacker. However, the situation could change in 2027, especially if their efforts to bring in a top-level number nine continues to go poorly.
