Spain were held to a goalless draw in their opening World Cup fixture after a brilliant performance from Cape Verde held the European champions to a 0-0 result.
Spain’s dominance in possession and chanc es could not beat the defensive heroics of goalkeeper Vozinha who had an incredible outing in between the sticks denying Ferran Torres and keeping out 27 attempts from La Roja. 15 of those came from insiude the penalty area where defensive duo Diney Borges and Pico Lopes held steadfast against the tricky footwork of the Spanish attackers.
Despite Spain’s control they lacked creativity and not even the reinforcements of substitutes Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams were enough to force a winner for the Spanish. Cape Verde, on their World Cup debut, took a famous point away from the clash in Atlanta and will now have their sights on making it out of Group H.
