European champions looking to reach last 16

Spain take on Austria this evening in a bid to reach the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The European champions finished top of Group H thanks to victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay after their shock 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their opening match. They beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 on matchday two in Atlanta, Georgia, as Lamine Yamal netted on his first World Cup start, and Mikel Oyarzabal scored a brace. They beat Uruguay 1-0 on matchday three in Guadalajara, Mexico, as Alex Baena’s strike sent Marcelo Bielsa’s side home.

Luis de la Fuente has hardly shuffled his pack so far this tournament, plumping for the same XI for the three group games. The only real changes have been to manage injuries out wide, with Nico Williams now a serious doubt for the rest of the competition, while Yamal is being managed as he continues his comeback trail from a hamstring issue that kept him out of the end of Barcelona’s league campaign.

As for Austria, there is a familar face in the dugout, with former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick the manager. He led his side to second place in Group J. Stay up to date with all the latest from Los Angeles with our live blog below.
