Spain is set to take on Georgia at the Estadio Martínez Valero in Elche on Saturday evening.
This pivotal World Cup qualifying match could move La Roja a step closer to clinching direct entry to the 2026 tournament. Currently, Luis de la Fuente’s squad tops Group E after two convincing victories last month, including a resounding 6-0 rout of Turkey and a 3-0 win over Bulgaria. Georgia, meanwhile, sits in second place. They responded well to a narrow 3-2 defeat by Turkey by bouncing back with a 3-0 triumph over Bulgaria.
A few key absences are hampering Spain’s preparations. For instance, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is out while he recovers from a pubic injury. This will sideline him for another two to three weeks.
Defensive prospect Dean Huijsen has also withdrawn from camp due to muscle fatigue. As a result, the team has called up Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte as cover. Additionally, influential midfielder Rodri remains sidelined, and the coaching staff omitted Fabián Ruiz due to a minor issue. However, Spanish officials have emphasised that these exclusions are purely precautionary.
Despite these setbacks, the manager has assembled a robust 26-man squad. It blends seasoned names with rising stars, and Unai Simón remains the established number one in goal. This strong squad will look to continue Spain’s stellar 2025 form. In fact, the team is unbeaten in regular play all year. Their only blemish was a penalty shootout loss to Portugal in the Nations League final.
Spain predicted XI: Simon; Porro, Le Normand, Cubarsi, Cucurella; Pedri, Merino, Zubimendi; Olmo, Oyarzabal, F Torres
The match will kick off at 7:45pm BST on Saturday, 11th October.
