The UEFA Women’s Nation’s League will reach its climax Wednesday evening with the final and the third place game taking place. Here is what happened in both clashes.
Scorers: Bühl 66′, Schüller 78′
Germany booked their spot in the Olympics with a win in the Nations League third-place playoff, denying historic rivals, The Netherlands.
It was tight from the opening whistle between the two historic rivals, with both sides having long stretches of possession.
Most of that possession was dull however, as neither set of forwards could carve out any major scoring chances.
The deadlock was finally broken past the hour mark when Klara Bühl popped up at the back-post to volley home her shot and snatch the lead for the Germans.
The tie was put to bed just over 10 minutes later when second-half sub Lea Schüller made a major impact off the bench to double Germany’s lead.
Scorers: Bonmatí 32′, Caldentey 53′
The world champions were buzzing from the very first whistle, looking to collect the silverware in a second consecutive major tournament.
They were rewarded for their first-half efforts when Aitana Bonmatí darted through the France defence before getting on the end of a pin-point cross to tap home the opener.
Spain were not finished there however, as Mariona Caldentey picked up similar position after the restart to take advantage of some poor French marking, side-footing her effort into the bottom corner to double Spain’s lead.
The two striked were all the talented Spanish side would need to see out the final 30 minutes and coast to, yet another major tournament victory.
