Automated offside detection will be introduced next season across Spain’s first and second divisions, Javier Tebas has announced.
According to Marca, the La Liga president said the process is already under way, it now hinges on technological matters, and he hopes it can be ready from matchday one. He was speaking at a La Liga event in Madrid on Monday.
La Liga currently uses a semi-automated system that still needs human input from the video assistant referee, notably when choosing the contentious freeze frame for the pass.
The upgrade will place a microchip inside the ball to pinpoint the exact moment a player strikes it.
That signal will be matched with player positions captured by special cameras in each stadium, removing the need to select the frame.
