The Spanish federation want Luis de la Fuente to remain Spain head coach through 2030, building on an emphatic World Cup triumph. The federation believes continued success depends on his leadership.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the plan is a two-year extension for De la Fuente and his staff, taking the project to the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal, where La Roja will defend their title.

Federation president Rafael Louzán oversaw De la Fuente’s first renewal on taking office, backing him early as a revamped, younger squad went on to win the European Championship.

De la Fuente then settled in and extended his contract to 2028, ahead of a World Cup he went on to win to secure Spain’s second star in striking fashion. His position is locked in through Euro 2028 in Great Britain, and the federation now want longer-term certainty.

While interest in De la Fuente is growing, he is considered loyal and aligned with the federation, so agreement is not expected to be problematic. Louzán intends to let the summer pass, yet hopes to close the matter quickly to provide stability.

Asked publicly about his future, De la Fuente has avoided elaborating, preferring not to take the spotlight, and the matter is expected to be handled with calm and confidentiality.

Appointed on 12 December 2022 to replace Luis Enrique, he is nearing four years in charge. If plans proceed, his tenure could reach eight years with a largely settled core likely to feature at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
