The Spanish federation is working on the details of a landmark scheme that would allow women’s national team players to freeze their eggs. It is understood to have been agreed months ago and is already active, with some players showing interest.

“For me it is a huge step, because the federation understands you are serving your country against your biological clock, that you cannot stop and cannot be a mother because you need your body to work,” she said, speaking to EL PAÍS.

Players have seen the agreement, which would let those who want to become mothers do so after their careers. It is not intended to dissuade maternity during playing years, rather to provide another option so motherhood is not ruled out by football.

The only Spanish precedent came in 2023, when FUTPRO struck a deal with fertility clinic Natuvitro to support members’ maternity plans. It offered exclusive advantages in fertility treatment, egg preservation and other specialised medical services, aiming to ensure players could choose motherhood freely without derailing their careers.
