Successful title defence: Having already come first in the coveted fan vote in April, Michael Olise also scored FC Bayern’s Goal of the Month in May. And just as in the previous month’s 4–3 win over Real Madrid, his goal was not only a thing of beauty but also secured victory for the Munich side.
Bayern struggled for much of their final away game of the season against relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg. Instead of making their mark up front, the league’s best attacking side found themselves initially stretched at the back. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy. Wolfsburg are battling for survival,” explained sporting director Christoph Freund afterwards. Bayern needed a special moment – and once again, Michael Olise was the man who delivered it.
In the 56th minute, the 24-year-old darted inside from the right wing and curled an unstoppable shiot into the top left corner. It was a move Olise had pulled off many times before – and one the opposing defenders were once again helpless to prevent. The German record champions' supporters were also impressed and voted the forward’s strike the best goal of May with 39 per cent of the votes cast. Second place went to Leon Goretzka (36%) for his direct free-kick against Heidenheim, whilst third place was secured by Harry Kane (22%) for his goal to make it 2-0 in the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart.
Olise has also been in fine form for the French national team of late:
