Sporting 2-2 Tondela: stoppage time collapse piles more misery on Lions

An incredible end to tonight’s Liga Portugal match at Alvalade saw Tondela score two injury time goals to snatch a draw against Sporting.

The Lions dominated the match but had to wait more than an hour to take the lead, largely thanks to another impressive display by Tondela goalkeeper Bernardo Fontes.

The Brazilian could do nothing however when Luis Suárez showed his predatory instincts by smartly turning in substitute Salvador Blopa’s cross on 62 minutes. And when João Silva deflected Geny Catamo’s shot into his own net to double Sporting’s lead it appeared game over.

Late drama

Tondela were seemingly given a lifeline in stoppage time when they won a penalty but Rui Silva saved Makan Aïko’s spot kick.

But from the resulting corner Blopa scored the second own goal of the match to make it 2-1 with a couple of minutes of stoppage time still remaining.

Incredibly, it was time enough for Cícero to power home a header from a corner to take a share of the spoils and keep Tondela’s hopes of avoiding the drop alive.

Gonçalo Feio’s side face a crunch match at Casa Pia on Sunday, where victory will give them real hope of at least avoiding automatic relegation and fighting for the promotion/relegation playoff spot.

Sporting have dropped four points against the bottom two clubs in Liga Portugal in the last four days, which will likely condemn them to a third-place finish in the standings.
