It’s difficult to ignore a striker who scores at a rate that defies logic. Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish international lighting up Liga Portugal with Sporting CP, has done just that—scoring 86 goals in 93 appearances. These aren’t video game numbers; they’re real, and they’re spectacular. And now, as Arsenal continue their search for a reliable frontman, Gyokeres’ name keeps emerging as the most plausible solution to Mikel Arteta’s lingering No. 9 conundrum.
In recent days, his current manager Rui Borges has gone out of his way to underline what Sporting already know—they have a jewel on their hands, and it won’t be long before Europe’s elite come knocking.
The North London club have been under scrutiny for their lack of cutting edge in the final third, particularly with injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz creating gaps in their attacking framework. While summer and January came and went without securing a marquee striker, the persistent links to Viktor Gyokeres suggest Arsenal are now prepared to act.

“He is the best in the league, clearly,” Borges told reporters. “There are no adjectives to describe Viktor. He is an extraordinary striker, very important to our team. He has helped the team to grow with confidence, quality of play.”
This isn’t just routine praise. It’s the kind of glowing assessment that typically precedes high-profile departures. Borges also noted how Gyokeres inspires those around him—a leader in both goals and presence. “He passes it on to his team-mates… we played a game with great quality, always connected. That’s what I asked for, and that’s what they did.”
Sporting are under no illusions. They know that keeping Gyokeres much longer will require more than just sentiment and silverware. His influence is already so pronounced that his manager admitted the club must “make the most of the time we have with him.”
While rumours swirl of negotiations and a possible £58.6m–£62.8m handshake clause, nothing has been confirmed officially. Yet the subtext is hard to ignore—especially with newly appointed Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta reportedly exploring personal terms with the player’s camp.
Borges further emphasised, “He is a focused player, who pays attention to details, he is competitive, never lets his guard down, and doesn’t want to rest… he instils confidence in his team-mates.”
In a market flooded with overvalued and underperforming strikers, Gyokeres presents a rare blend of consistency, mentality, and technical output.
At 26, Gyokeres is entering his prime, and his game seems perfectly tailored to the demands of the Premier League. He’s physical but mobile, intelligent in his movement, and finishes with surgical precision. It’s no surprise that Sporting feel it’s “unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years.”
That’s not hyperbole; it’s a warning. Arsenal may have competition. Borges made no attempt to hide that either. “Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”
As Arteta’s side gear up for what could be a transformative summer, landing a striker of Gyokeres’ calibre could be the defining move in their project. The message from Lisbon is clear: if Arsenal want him, they’ll need to move decisively—and pay handsomely.
