Sporting Kansas City acquired midfielder Erik Thommy from German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart, through the 2024 Major League Soccer season with a club option for 2025.

The player will occupy an international roster spot once the MLS Secondary Transfer Window officially begins on July 7. The midfielder could then look to make his debut for Sporting Kansas City on July 9 against CF Montreal.

“This is a big step for me in my career. I have had very good conversations with Peter Vermes and I am excited to join MLS, a league that has developed a lot in the last few years. This club has great fans, great facilities and a great stadium. I want to give my best for the team and I am ready for the challenge,”  Thommy said.

He arrives after managing 42 goals and 33 assists across nine seasons in Germany.

"Sometimes you have that feeling inside, and my feeling said yes, I want to do it. MLS has developed a lot in the last few years. Sporting has great facilities, great fans, a great stadium and they play attractive football," Thommy said.

"I am a midfielder that loves to go one-on-one," he said about his style of play. "I am a dribbler with a good right foot. I love to shoot from distance, but I am also a team player. The best word to describe me is humble."

Thommy joins recent signing, Nigerian striker William Agada on the squad to help save Sporting Kansas City from their disastrous start to the 2022 campaign. SKC currently sit in 12th on the Western Conference table with a 4W-9L-4D record.

The newest players can also alleviate the effects of Sporting’s injury-riddled roster as Designated Players Alan Pulido and Gadi Kinda both remain sidelined after undoing knee surgeries.
