Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has again insisted that Viktor Gyokeres will not be allowed to leave for €70m (£59.7m) this summer.
Gyokeres is keen to leave Sporting after two prolific seasons in Portugal. The Swedish striker has netted 97 goals in 102 games across all competitions since arriving from Coventry City in 2023.
Several top teams have expressed interest in signing Gyokeres with Arsenal and Manchester United among those to have enquired.
The 27-year-old believed he had a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting to leave this summer for a fee of €70m, significantly less than his €100m (£85.4m) release clause at the The Estádio José Alvalade.
However, Sporting president Varandas has insisted Gyokeres will only leave on their terms. He has reiterated that €70m proposal will not be enough to prise the player from the Portuguese champions, casting doubt on a potential move to the Premier League.
Arsenal are also in negotiations to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, with the 22-year-old viewed as a longer-term – and potentially cheaper – addition.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The Red Devils are expected to require sales before funding further high-profile deals.
Varandas said that Gyokeres and his representatives ‘knows’ what the price tag is, but that it is more than €70m.
“I’m not going to say what the price is, the player knows what it is,” Varandas said.
“I can tell you that Viktor won’t leave for €60m plus €10m he won’t, he just won’t.”
