Sporting ‘to consider’ Abel Ferreira as Palmeiras coach’s deal runs to 2027 | OneFootball

Sporting, third in Portugal, are surveying the market for a potential coaching change, with Abel Ferreira among the names viewed favourably.

Correio da Manhã reports that the Palmeiras manager is gaining traction behind the scenes, although there is no immediate plan to dismiss Rui Borges.

Ferreira is under contract at Palmeiras until 2027 and the deal carries no release clause, meaning either party can end it by giving notice.

He has repeatedly said he does not wish to leave Palmeiras, citing the team’s stability and that his family are settled in Brazil. He has also spoken of loving his work with Leila Pereira, Barros, staff and players, and of not expecting the same voice, freedom and recognition even at Barcelona, Real Madrid or City.

A former Sporting player, he began coaching there after retiring at 33 with a knee injury, leading the Under-19s and the B team before moving to Braga.

In 2025 he finished runner-up to Flamengo in both the Brasileirão and the Libertadores, and Flamengo have since overtaken Palmeiras to lead the current league. Both clubs are in the Libertadores semi-finals on opposite sides of the draw, so they could meet in the final on 28 November in Montevideo.
