Tottenham Hotspur are already on the look out for some new players ahead of the summer transfer window, and it seems as if they have identified a target straight away.
This is a positive sign for Spurs fans, as they became frustrated with the club leaving their january business so late.
However it's better late than never as they did bring in a few new faces to the team, in the form of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel on loan from RC Lens and Bayern Munich respectively, along with Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who they did actually bring in relatively early on, giving manager Ange Postecoglou some much needed depth with the heavily depleted squad.
Spurs approached Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney in the January just gone, however the club turned it down and Tottenham will be keeping a close eye on him ahead of the summer, but they could face some competition from fellow Premier League side Manchester United, who have also been a fan of the 22-year-old for quite a while now.
Hackey is a born and bred Boro boy, born in the nearby town of Redcar, and came through the academy of his boyhood club in 2021.
He has since played 89 times for the Teessiders in that time, as well as having a loan spell at Scunthorpe United in the 2021/22 season.
Hackney has also represented both England and Scotland at under 21 level, but yet to receive a call up from either of the senior sides.
He is a tenacious midfielder that can get about the pitch, he can make that late run in the box and get himself a goal, scoring five in his twenty seven appearances in the EFL Championship so far this season, but he's best played as a deep lying playmaker who likes to get on the ball in the first third of the pitch and looks to start attacks for his team.
He has also captained the Boro on plenty of occasions, showing he has great leadership qualities for such a young player.
Givemesport have revealed that a deal could happen for either Spurs or Manchester United for around twenty million pound mark.
Boro would obviously love to keep hold of such a talented player, but this might prove to be difficult if the the club fail to win promotion this season.
Boro, who are managed by former Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick, currently sit 7th and just outside the play-off places in the Championship, having lost to their bitter rivals Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium on Monday.
Boro have finished just short of a play-off position in three of the last four seasons, with the other losing the semi-final to Coventry City.
With these inconsistent performances and results over the years, it would not be a surprise if Hackney decided to take that next step this time around.
Postecoglou is of course far from the very biggest name in the football management world, but he has shown that your age doesn't matter when it comes to playing for Spurs, and if you're good enough then you will be given opportunities.
A number of players that have relocated to N17 in Ange's tenure have referenced their conversations they had with the 59 year old, with new signing Tel to be the latest to say it.
Overall, this would be a very good deal for the player and Spurs, a midfielder very comfortable in possession but also works hard and can get about the pitch, everything needed for an Ange Postecoglou team.
As well as being a player for the long term future, still being 22-years-old. If the rumoured price for £20m is true then it could be a very good deal, as you won't get many if any young English midfielders for that amount in today's game.
