On Tuesday night, or Wednesday morning if you are in Europe, Cristian Romero and his Argentina side were in CONMBEOL World Cup qualifying action at home to fierce rivals Brazil, for match day 14 of their qualifying campaign.
Ahead of the game, Argentina - the defending champions - had already booked their spot at the World Cup in North America next summer, by virtue of Bolivia drawing 0-0 at home to Rodrigo Bentancur's Uruguay side, meaning the hosts could not catch Argentina in the table.
As per usual, Romero was named in the starting XI by manager Lionel Scaloni. It was his 42nd cap for his country since making his debut in June of 2021.
Argentina would make the dream start, opening the scoring after just four minutes of the game. Then, after 12 minutes, they doubled their advantage. However, after 26 minutes, Brazil got one back, after Romero was robbed in possession by Matheus Cunha, who took full advantage to score, making it game on in Buenos Aires.
However, after 37 minutes, Argentina scored a third, restoring their earlier two goal advantage in the game. That was enough for a 3-1 lead heading into the half time interval.
After 71 minutes, Argentina got a fourth goal, putting the game beyond any doubt, and that is how it finished. Brazil had just three shots all game - the goal, from outside the box - and two free kick's from miles out too. A superb team performance from the world champions.
This victory has Argentina eight points clear with 31 points from their 14 games so far. Although they have already qualified, it will be nice for them to finish top of a qualification group (that Brazil have been part of) for the first time since qualification for the 2002 World Cup.
As for Romero himself, another 90 minutes - which has been the frustration to some fans, who have brought up the fact his minutes were managed in the defeat to Fulham, just for him to play 180 minutes over the break. Nevertheless, no injury to report on. Aside from the error for the goal, another solid performance for his country over the course of the 90 minutes.
His international break is now done, and he will return to Spurs ahead of the clash with Chelsea in the Premier League next week.
