Down in League Two, George Abbott and his Notts County side were back in action, as they faced class of 92 owned Salford City on the road. It was the magpies first game since the 3rd of December, and Abbott’s first game since the 30th of November, with a knock keeping him out of their previous game. In fact, it was his first league outing since the 23rd of November.
Sadly, it was not a happy return to the pitch, for anyone concerned. Notts were condemned to a tough 3-0 defeat up in Greater Manchester. The Spurs teenager played the full 90 minutes of the game, playing as one of the two number tens playing off of the striker in manager Stuart Maynard’s 343 set up. As can be the case when he is played further forward, he was not able to make his usual impact on the game.
Safe to say, Abbott’s side are in a bit of a rut at the moment. They have lost their last three games in all competitions, and four of the last five – drawing the other game. In terms of League Two, it is two draws and three defeats from their last five outings, as they continue to slide down the table.
Having been in the play-off positions, or automatic promotion spots, for pretty much all of the season up until now, Notts are now in 11th place in League Two, with 28 points in their 19 games, three points away from the final play-off spot. It is worth caveating that they have a game in hand on a few teams, including the side in seventh, but it is still a concerning run of form that needs sorting as soon as possible, if they are to be in those positions come the end of the season.
Next up for the Spurs loanee and his Notts counterparts is a game at home to Bradford City next week. Having won today, their visitors have overtaken them in League Two, though it is almighty close. Both teams have 28 points from 19 games, but Bradford have a plus five goal difference, compared to Notts +4, with their goal difference taking a bit of a dent in today’s defeat.
That game is next Saturday, the 21st December, for their final game before Christmas. The more traditional 15:00 GMT slot for that one.
