The midfielder started in Spurs’ Champions League defeat of Borussia Dortmund this week but was withdrawn with just over an hour played after a heavy-handed tackle. He was replaced by Jun’ai Byfield.

Speaking after the match, Thomas Frank described it as a “contact [injury],” and Standard Sport reported yesterday that he was expected to be sidelined until April.

And Tottenham have now confirmed that the Sweden international has undergone surgery on a ‘high ankle sprain’.

A club statement read: “We can confirm that Lucas Bergvall has today undergone surgery on his left ankle.

“The 19-year-old midfielder suffered a high ankle sprain during Tuesday's UEFA Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund. Lucas will now commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff.

“We're all with you, Lucas.”

This latest injury only adds to what has become a deeply frustrating season for Bergvall.

He is set to miss both legs of Sweden’s World Cup qualifying play-off final against Ukraine, and the subsequent final, should Sweden qualify.

His absence also adds to Frank’s mounting injury woes. He joins James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur on the sidelines.

Bergvall has already missed plenty of time for Spurs through injury this season, having been struck down with a groin injury in December and a concussion in November.

Speaking after the Dortmund match, Frank said: “It looks like a [long-term] one.

“Unfortunately, Lucas picked up an ankle injury, so keep being very unlucky with injuries.

“He's been assessed these two days, so time frame I know more about in the next couple of days.”
