Midfielder suffered setback on international duty

The 19-year-old came off injured just seven minutes into Spurs’ 1-0 derby defeat to Chelsea two weeks ago after catching a pass in the face, subsequently missing matches against Copenhagen and Manchester United.

He was called up to the Sweden squad despite still being in the midst of his mandated 12-day recovery period.

Graham Potter had hoped Bergvall would be able to train with his Sweden team-mates on Thursday despite being unable to head a ball, but he has now been excused from the camp precaution.

Sweden confirmed the decision in a statement: "Lucas Bergvall will not be available to play in the men's national team's next two matches due to the consequences of the concussion he suffered in connection with Tottenham's league match against Chelsea on November 1."

Speaking to Sport Bladet, Swedish FA executive Stefan Pettersson added: "We had agreed with Tottenham's doctor to do some tests during the week and then run at full speed so that Lucas would feel it properly.

“When there was a reaction, there was no hesitation. We don't want to take any risks."

Bergvall has been replaced in the Sweden squad by Newcastle’s Emil Krafth.

The young Swede now faces a race against time to be passed fit for the north London derby - Spurs’ first match after the international break.

Thomas Frank will hope to be boosted by a handful of returnees ahead of that crunch derby match, with the likes of Cristian Romero, Mohammed Kudus, and long-term absentee Radu Dragusin all expected to be in contention at the Emirates.
