Tottenham’s bid to secure Premier League survival will now go to the final day after a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge left them still looking over their shoulder.

Spurs arrived knowing that a point would likely be enough to keep them safe and that victory would guarantee survival outright at West Ham’s expense.

Chelsea, led by interim boss Calum McFarlane following confirmation that Xabi Alonso will take over next season, struck first through Enzo Fernández, who produced a fine swerving finish on 18 minutes to beat Antonín Kinský.

The visitors showed little attacking threat for long spells, although Mathys Tel did rattle the post in the first half. Their resistance was broken again after 67 minutes when Andrey Santos converted from close range after a costly turnover from Randal Kolo Muani.

Richarlison set up a tense finale when he pulled one back with 16 minutes remaining, finishing off a clever assist from Pape Sarr, but Spurs could not find the equaliser despite late pressure.

There was frustration at the end as Tottenham appeals for a penalty were waved away after Marc Cucurella appeared to drag down Micky van de Ven at a corner.

The result leaves Spurs two points above West Ham heading into a nervy final day against Everton, where their Premier League status is still not fully secured.
