Charlie Austin has claimed Spurs are not a 'big club' as they start their search for Thomas Frank's successor following his sacking.

The Dane was sacked by the Londoners following their 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle on Tuesday night, a result which leaves them just five points above the relegation zone.

With a fixture against bitter rivals Arsenal coming up, and West Ham having found form, there are fears that Spurs could be dragged into a relegation battle this season, something that was unthinkable when Frank was appointed.

Charlie Austin weighs in on Tottenham managerial situation

Therefore, it came as no surprise when Frank was dismissed, and attention has now turned to appointing his successor ahead of the north London derby.

Ex-Spurs chief Harry Redknapp has been linked with a return to the club on an interim basis until the end of the campaign, and it remains to be seen what road the Tottenham hierarchy will go down.

Austin was among those to debate Spurs’ situation, and he suggested on social media that Redknapp, who was his manager at QPR, wouldn’t return to the Premier League side, whilst he also added that they are not the big draw that some fans think they are.

“Harry Redknapp is not going to become the manager of Spurs. The Cheltenham festival is coming up. He has a horse fully in the race and top of the market! Spurs fans just realise you are no longer a big club, you just have an elite stadium and training ground!!!”

Redknapp has confirmed that he would be willing to take over at Spurs for the final months of the season, although it’s unclear whether he is under consideration.

Tottenham have work to do to avoid relegation to the Championship

Austin is sure to have annoyed the Spurs fans with his comments on social media, but the reality is that they are in a relegation battle at the moment, so that is going to put off high-profile names.

Of course, it would still be a massive shock if they were to go down, but the reality is that they do have work to do to pull clear.

West Ham’s resurgence under Nuno Espírito Santo has been impressive, and there is a possibility that Spurs are just two points from safety by the time they kick off against Arsenal in their next league game.

So, this appointment is massive for the club, whether they decide to go for a short-term solution to get them through until the summer, or for someone to lead what they hope will be an exciting new era.
