Liverpool's fall from grace this season has been highlighted by one abandonment. Things have to change
Go back to the summer and Liverpool were on top of the world. The Reds swept through the transfer market on the back of a dominant Premier League title-winning season.
Twice they broke their transfer record and in ways that highlighted them as a true force in football. Firstly, they convinced Florian Wirtz to join them - one of the most in-demand players on the planet and arguably the biggest signing Liverpool have ever made.
Then they had Alexander Isak essentially forcing his way to Anfield, such was his desire to play for the Reds.
Unfortunately, things have changed since. Liverpool are not viewed as they were in the summer and nothing shows that better than the Marc Guehi situation.
Marc Guehi came incredibly close to signing for Liverpool back in the summer. The move came right at the end of the transfer window but ultimately ended in failure as Crystal Palace decided they couldn't afford to lose their captain without signing a replacement.
There was no time to do that, of course. It meant Palace risked losing Guehi on a free transfer at the end of the season but one more year of the player was deemed to be worth more than the transfer fee.
But it also meant that Guehi valued joining Liverpool higher than the extra money he would have received as a free agent. Moving without a transfer fee effectively guarantees extra money for the player as clubs are making a massive saving.
