Between the starting strikers’ stuttering form and a lack of goals from the backups, Inter Milan’s attack could have a crisis brewing.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They describe the Nerazzurri’s attacking depth as a “void.”
So far this season, Inter have not lacked for goals. They have found the back of the net 41 times, right in line with where they’d want to be at in mid-December.
However, only twenty of these goals have come from strikers.
That means that more than half of Inter’s goals have come from other sources.
There is a positive side to this, undoubtedly. Inter know that they can rely on a lot of different goalscorers, with a team style of play that creates many chances and players with the ability to finish them.
But undoubtedly, for consistency, Inter would prefer to have ruthless strikers.
The form of Inter’s two starting strikers has not been ideal.
Marcus Thuram has certainly been very prolific. The Frenchman has scored ten goals in Serie A to date, putting him right behind Mateo Retegui in the scoring charts.
However, the big worry is that most of Thuram’s goals have come in bursts.
The 27-year-old has made a real habit of scoring braces – and bagged a hattrick against Torino.
All well and good, but it means that Thuram has actually only scored in five different matches for Inter this season.
The Nerazzurri would probably prefer that the France international score week in and week out, even if it was only a goal per game.
The Argentine has not scored for Inter in forty days. He has scored just six goals in all competitions.
A lack of sharpness is evident in the Inter captain, who’s looked exhausted at times – understandably so considering his intense workload in the last twelve months.
But the fact remains. If Martinez can’t shake his malaise off, Inter could start to struggle for goals.
Then, behind Martinez and Thuram, the Corriere argue that there is a “void.”
Marko Arnautovic has yet to score this season. Mehdi Taremi has scored once – from the penalty spot against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.
Joaquin Correa got on the scoresheet in his surprise start against Hellas Verona. But it’s hardly as though he’ll be playing and scoring regularly.
All of that leads to the conditions for Inter’s attack to enter a full-blown crisis if some of their attacking players don’t start scoring more.
