Stefan Ortega says a return to Germany had been possible before he joined Nottingham Forest from Manchester City on a short-term deal worth around £500,000 until the summer.

"The door was open, and now it's closed. It didn't work out. I would have liked to return to Germany." He told Sky Sports.

The German was introduced to the City Ground crowd before Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. First-choice Matz Sels sustained a groin injury in that game and his availability for Friday’s 8pm trip to Leeds United is uncertain, so Ortega could be called upon.

He had spoken to several clubs and Bayer Leverkusen considered him before turning to Jonas Omlin on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Forest moved for reinforcements after summer signing John Victor required knee surgery following last month’s defeat at Aston Villa.

That left head coach Sean Dyche with Sels and Angus Gunn as senior options, and Gunn made his first appearance when replacing Sels at half-time against Palace.

“It’s unlucky that John got a long-term injury. That’s why they looked into the market,” Ortega said. “I’m here to support everyone but to try to challenge everyone as well because I’m still ambitious and want to play as many games as possible. But of course it’s all about the team.”
