Steph Houghton makes her return to Man City in new role

Steph Houghton retired at the end of the 2023/24 season, calling time on a trailblazing domestic and international career. After bidding farewell to Manchester City over the summer, Houghton has now returned to the club in an exciting new role.

After playing for Man City for more than 10 years, the Lionesses legend has taken on the positions of Club Ambassador and Project Officer.

Houghton originally joined Man City as a player in 2014, making the move from Arsenal. The defender captained her club to the WSL title in 2016 and secured the FA Cup in the 2016/17, 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons. Houghton also went on to win the FA WSL cup in 2014, 2016, 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons.

Retiring from football has not caused Houghton slow down, either. The former City and England captain recently published her first book, an autobiography titled ‘Leading From The Back: My Journey to the Top of Women’s Football.’ She has also enjoyed stepping into the world of punditry for both Sky Sports and the BBC.

What does Steph Houghton’s new role entail?

Houghton and Man City announced earlier this month that 2024 that she would be returning to the club as an ambassador. She will act on behalf of the club at various events around the world, including the Ballon d’Or ceremony. She joins other club legends including Mike Summerbee, Joleon Lescott and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Houghton breaks further new ground as the first woman to become an official representative of Man City.

Houghton has also taken on the role as a Project Officer at City. She will liaise with various footballing departments at the City Football Academy, allowing her to gain valuable experience. She will start by working alongside the Insights Team.
