Saudi Arabia’s lucrative offensive on European football shows no signs of slowing down this summer, and according to Foot Mercato, former French international Steve Mandanda is the latest big-name player to be contacted by the Gulf state’s league officials.
However, the former Marseille man, who moved on to Rennes last summer, will remain in Ligue 1 for the coming campaign and see out his contract with the Bretons.
The World Cup winner was not convinced by the approach from Saudi Arabia, and has instead decided to remain in Brittany for the time being. Brief talks had taken place with his agent, but these did not lead to anything.
Mandanda, who passed the milestone of 500 Ligue 1 games last season, is now set to begin his 16th season in the French top flight. His 14-year spell at Marseille, who he joined in 2007 from formative club Le Havre, was only briefly interrupted by a spell at Crystal Palace. The goalkeeper would quickly return from South London, having made only 10 appearances in his season on the other side of the Channel.
