When Steven Gerrard’s name surfaced again, with odds evening overnight from a shock 14-1 against, alarm bells were ringing hard in Ibrox Noise. The simple fact is that we, alongside many Rangers fans, do not want Steven Gerrard Rangers return back as Rangers manager under any circumstances. Gerrard has had his time at Rangers. He is done for us.
Four refusals
He has already said potentially no four times. Four separate occasions where Steven Gerrard rejected Rangers. One, when he originally betrayed us to leave for Aston Villa. Two, when he said no earlier this year before Russell Martin took over, on grounds of his wife, we believe. Three, when he clearly said no to the Rangers board at the weekend. And four, the rumours that he said no again when Andrew Cavenagh went straight back in and asked yet again, as reported by Ibrox Noise.
We know of three definite refusals and potentially a fourth. If ever this was an answer, we do not know what else could be. The simple fact is Gerrard does not want to be Rangers manager again. Yes, he made the journey. Yes, he came to London. We suspect it might have been out of curiosity as much as anything else, as suggested by Ibrox Noise.
Too many noes
Whatever his reasons were, you do not get to say no to Rangers even twice. Three times is ridiculous, and a potential four is completely astonishing. You do not get to say no that many times to Rangers and still be held with affection. It has been unfair on the fans. The emotions and heartstrings are being pulled all over the place.
But the simple fact is Gerrard has said no, and that is a wrap. That has to be the end of this, as echoed in Ibrox Noise.
Close the Gerrard chapter
We do not want Gerrard back now. He has said no far too many times. It has become a habit. Now him ever coming back would be embarrassing and desperate. At the end of the day, can we just please close the Gerrard chapter once and for all?
As Sky Sports and BBC Sport continue to monitor Rangers’ managerial search, one thing remains clear — Gerrard’s repeated rejections leave no room for hope. The Scotsman also notes the frustration among supporters. Rangers must finally move on. Steven Gerrard Rangers return is over.
