Stije Resink has joined AZ Alkmaar from Groningen in a deal valued at four million euros. According to Glorioso 1904, Groningen have kept a percentage of any future sale.

The 23-year-old midfielder remains in the Eredivisie and has signed a two-season contract with the Alkmaar club. His name had been linked to Benfica in January.

At that time, Benfica negotiated his signing, but Groningen demanded 10 million euros, higher than the fee eventually agreed this summer. As his contract neared its end, his release clause fell to six million euros.

The move to Lisbon did not materialise and shortly after the winter window closed Resink suffered a serious injury. He is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is expected back only at the end of the year.

After talks collapsed, he did not hide his discomfort with the media attention around his future. He said reports pulled in different directions and that he spent a week receiving messages with images of him in a Benfica shirt.
