Liverpool needed a response and they got one quickly. A 2-0 win over Ipswich Town was settled inside nine minutes, with Alexander Isak doing the damage and Cody Gakpo supplying both assists. Simple enough on paper, decisive enough on the pitch.
After a slow start to the season, Andoni Iraola wanted urgency from the first whistle. Liverpool delivered it. They were direct, aggressive and far more purposeful in possession. Ipswich were exposed early and never really recovered once Isak had his first two clear sights of goal.
Isak summed up the mood clearly after the game: “Obviously we were waiting for the first win and we were talking about starting the game good, which we haven’t done recently. That was perfect for us to get two quick goals.
“I think we’re starting to get the way that we want to play and be offensive and attack the defence. I think we showed that today. We scored two and we could have scored more.”
That is the key point. The scoreline was controlled, the intent was better. Liverpool attacked space early, got runners forward and moved the ball with purpose. Isak now has three goals in three appearances, which is the sort of return expected from a £125m striker.

Gakpo deserves plenty of the credit. He created both goals at Portman Road and also set up Isak against Nottingham Forest. There is a pattern forming, and Liverpool will take it.
As Isak put it, “We were talking about when we win the ball to get forward as quickly as possible because that’s when things are quite open. Obviously Cody found me twice pretty good. He’s done amazingly [in] assisting and finding me in those situations and in good positions where I enjoy having the ball.”
No grand statements yet. That would be premature. Liverpool were better, sharper and more coherent, but there is still work to do. Isak knows it: “It’s still early. I think we still have a lot to learn and it’s game by game at this point.” That is the correct line. Liverpool have their first win. Now they need to make it look routine.
