Angelo Stiller has avoided serious injury after VfB Stuttgart’s 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim, the club said in a statement. The midfielder sustained only a bruise following a collision in the penalty area. Stuttgart did not say whether he will pause training.
Stiller was withdrawn in the 35th minute on Saturday. Around 10 minutes earlier he had gone down after a collision, then took a knee to the leg from TSG defender Ozan Kabak. He continued following treatment before signalling to be replaced.
After full time, coach Sebastian Hoeneß said he had been told the player had a knee haematoma and he did not yet know its severity.
Hoeneß was also unhappy that a penalty was not awarded and that VAR did not intervene. Having reviewed the footage, he judged it a foul, noting the knee appeared to buckle immediately and that Stiller fell and cried out at once.
Stiller has started all five of Stuttgart’s competitive matches this season. Stuttgart host Borussia Dortmund next Saturday. The World Cup participant could also be a candidate for new national team coach Jürgen Klopp, who is due to name his first Germany squad next Thursday.
